The 50/30/20 guideline
Needs $1,500 · Wants $900 · Savings $600

Rent comes first because it is fixed. What is left after your spending is what you can save — and a savings target counts as met within 10 %.

The 50/30/20 guideline — half on needs, 30 % on wants, 20 % saved — is a common starting point, not a rule: where rent is high, needs often take more.
